Pros

Elsevier is successfully transitioning from a publisher to an information analytics company. Great, unique assets for an information economy and recently also a world-class IT organization. People here are genuinely helpful and supportive.

Cons

Elsevier has become more bureaucratic, many levels of approval in a highly matrixed organization. It needs real dedication to drive innovation. High effort just to complete the paperwork.

Pros

Open to flexible work schedules, working from home, direct managers are open, helpful and flexible. Managers are reasonable regarding deadlines and promote a good work/life balance. Health Benefits work for me and vacation and holiday benefits are better than any I have ever experienced.

Cons

Publishing is going through a lot of flux right now. Elsevier has a large print component and the future of print is in the air right now, the company must change to meet the challenges of this diminishing market while upgrading it's growing on line presence. It is a struggle I think they are winning but it sometimes causes management to make sudden turns that are unnerving to employees. Also, if you are involved in the print side, your long term prospects look pretty dismal -- look to position yourself into the online side as quickly as possible.
