Pros

The workplace environment is great! The cultural mix, means that you are able to collaborate with colleagues from all around the globe on a daily basis. This truly helps individuals to develop their social skills alongside their professional aspirations.

Cons

There are many opportunities for career progression within Elsevier. However, I would like to see more support from mid-level management, encouraging their direct reports to challenge themselves and push the boundaries. At present, promotion is largely dependent on the motivation, drive and hunger for success demonstrated by the individual. I would like to see more support for emerging managers.

Thanks for your review. We are pleased to know that you feel our workplace is great and that the diverse nature of our workforce promotes collaboration and contributes to our culture. Yes, there are many opportunities for career progression within Elsevier. However, it is important that both managers and staff are proactive in having discussions to facilitate how best to pursue any of the opportunities available to them. As a company, we provide the guidelines and channels for these development discussions to take place. However, we do encourage staff to take responsibility for ensuring that these discussions and the actions tied to them take place. All our employees should feel empowered to challenge themselves and push boundaries. In a company with more than 7,000 employees, naturally, some mid managers may be more proactive than others just as some employees will be more proactive. We recommend that all our managers support our employees to pursue the next step in their careers. We believe in promoting from within, however, promotion is dependent on several factors, one of which is business needs. Yearly, depending on employee’s performance, most employees get an annual salary increase. Should an employee feel they have reached the top of their pay scale, Elsevier as a global company with many business units and departments, encourage such an employee to challenge themselves by seeking to change their roles, move to other departments or choose another career path with us or with another organization.
