Pros

Time off to do charity work, there is always a lot of job opportunities due to high staff turn-over. Lucrative if a contractor. They talk the talk.

Cons

Poorly paid FTC, salary increase locked to 10% max per year. Authority given to very inexperienced people. Consistently make bad technical decisions. Money not set aside for training. All training expected to take place via online videos. Disinterest in you doing your job, limited feedback. Yearly review set to a bell curve. Forced to work in areas you do not want to work in.

Thanks for your review. This is not the experience that we want any of our employees to have. However, we are incredibly proud of the work that our tech teams globally are doing to continue building an environment that is supportive, nurturing and inclusive. Our attrition last year was below 10%, which is in line with industry standards and below the tech turnover in London. We use contractors due to project peaks, but we reduce the number of these contractors to give further opportunities to our permanent employees. Salaries are equitable between new joiners and existing members of staff to ensure that we are paying at market rates. Employees in tech attend conferences and instructor-led training sessions. Online courses are very much part and parcel of the training package and more than half of our tech employees are involved in online tech training pilot and the feedback so far has been positive. We strongly defend our graduate program and we are conscious that graduates demand some coaching, mentoring and training early in their career, so we provide these to them. The annual intake of these diverse new talents has been rewarding in many ways for us as an organization. At Elsevier, all our employees are responsible for their own development and careers, with support from their managers through career development conversations, action planning and ongoing coaching. We encourage you to partake in helping us to build a tech environment that is supportive, nurturing and inclusive by speaking directly to your manager or if you prefer, contact us anonymously at elseviergdrev@elsevier.com

Pros

All of the people I work with are very nice. No issues, no negative pressure, everyone is very understanding and accommodating, especially towards new employees like myself (~8 months as of this review). Management is great, my co-workers are all super friendly and helpful. I am given a project and entrusted to run with it by myself, which is good for growth, and I know I have people on my team I can go to in order to help me. Work/life balance is phenomenal, I can work completely from home if I need to (though too much of this is frowned upon, and it is not the norm to work from home more than once every couple weeks as need arises).

Cons

Although the company is moving towards a more future-focused, "cool" work environment, we're not quite there yet. Cubicles can be a pro if you prefer them, but I tend to love collaboration and pair programming, and that happens very infrequently here. It is not the standard, rather something that occasionally happens. Overall, the environment is pretty old-school business style, what you would expect from a typical office environment. This is mostly due to the experience level of the teams, and everyone is used to doing it the way it has been done for a while, and see no reason to change. If that is what you want though, then ignore this being a con! This may just be a generational difference too though.
