Pros

The best reason to work at Dell is as a resume builder to get a job with a better company. It has often been said that Dell is a good "first or third" place to work, but not somewhere from which you retire.

Cons

Management continuously erodes employee compensation. Employee morale is at an all time low. Workers are given unrealistic job expectations to meet due to downsizing and then told that compensation is cut because Dell is a "meritocracy". There is no longer such a thing as "work-life" balance, yet senior management seems surprised that there is a mass exodus of long term employees jumping ship.

Pros

Dell is very good place to learn how to run a company on fundamentals, namely grow the top line and manage operating expense. The decision is data driven. Management at every level look at financials on a daily basis. Operation is the best I know. Finance is very powerful function. The pay is not bad. Austin is great city to live

Cons

The biggest downside of working Dell is that PC industry is maturing more like auto industry. The growth or opportunity is limited. Dell is more or less operating at quarter level. It really needs leadership and culture change to have everybody pay more attention to long term growth.

Pros

There are many opportunities to learn new skills on the job, and to interact with global groups. If you're willing to extend your horizons, you can extend beyond your formal job description into additional projects, and feel you're contributing above and beyond to the success of the total company. Senior management does pay attention to employee surveys - I have seen some positive changes over the years.

Cons

Until all the reorganization is complete, career growth opportunities seem pretty limited. Some of the globalization efforts result in days with early morning AND late evening conference calls, just to stay in touch with our partners in the other regions.
