Pros

Pretty good IT system now I work in another IT company in Silicon Valley. Lots of on-line and in-person learning opportunities, the internal e-learning system make learning on technical and on-technical topics very easy. Also relatively easy moving from one group to the other, with no upside. I like John Chambers will meet with employees every month whose birthday falls into the month. Also he meet with new hires very regularly. Cisco shows consciousness on getting green and help the community. They have an extensive outreach program in which lots of volunteer opportunities are posted, encouraged and participated. Good job in there.

Cons

Only lateral movement moving from one group to the other, absolutely ridiculous policy. there should be really an incentive for people to move from one position to the other. I did an prestigious MBA program, then when I finish, there is absolutely no upside to move within Cisco. The HR did not find an easy way for me to find a new and exciting opportunity. So I left. Also, the salary review process. It really depends on your manager. If your manager likes you, you can get lots of money. If you are not the favorite, then you are out of luck.

Pros

Stable job, especially if your grade is below a Director. Technology exposure is generally focused on networking - so if you don't have networking on resume then it is a great place.

Cons

- Technology exposure is very uni-dimensional unless you are working in one of the emerging products - Very little "real" work for Directors and above, it is mostly powerpoints, politics and posturing. - Decision making is tied to hundreds of layers of management - SVP and VP promos are random and makes you wonder if merit was any consideration
