Pros

CIBC is one of the top five banks within Canada. Being a large corporation employing over 40,000 employees, it is indeed one of the employers to look at when entering the job market. It offers opportunities in all areas, functions and in various provinces and cities in Canada. Its employee base is very diverse. it communcates with its employees very well.

Cons

Career progression at CIBC is normally a uphill task. There is lack of strong correlation between promotion and talent or performance indicating that multiple factors beyond your control are in operation. There is reorganization activity happening all the time.

Pros

CIBC is one of the leading financial institutions in Canada Working for a large organisation that tries to hire from within, create a diverse work force and offers good benefits to its employees are what CIBC has going for it. CIBC's brand "What Matters to Me" is taken to heart by its Directors who seem to continue to work on their transparency in terms of directing and communicating issues to its workers. They have many different Reward & Recognition programs that are performance based to motivate their employees. Most people that work for the bank enjoy a good work/life balance - either through flexible hours, time off in lieu or other ways. CIBC tries to make a difference in the world - outside of just making a steady profit ... The CIBC Run for the Cure particpation is incredible throughout many communities across Canada. CIBC also supports Miracle Day and the United Way. Overall, CIBC is an employer that invites you to be your best, gives you the tools to do so, but like any company - it is up to the individual employees to create their own path.

Cons

The compensation of many roles at CIBC may not be equal to what you can earn doing the same job for another financial institution.

Pros

- large corporation, good career opportunities, strong retail bank and credit card division. There is a lot of opportunity to move around within the corporation. Management rewards fairly well with strong performance. Pay for education including stock licenses and other relevant courses.

Cons

- weakening capital markets platform, penchant for senior management to take higher risks for minimal rewards, limiting comp. The bank has made some American type errors in their corp portfolio and are know paying for it. CIBC world markets used to battle DS for top wholesaler in Canada, those days are for now over. It may be a while until CIBC world markets gets their act together.
