African Development Bank- an Institution with Promise

Pros

The excitement of being able to make a difference to a region that needs development the most. It is a privilege that few get.

Cons

The top management is often arbitrary and opaque. While most people find tremendous satisfaction in being a part of the development delivery, there is frustration at senior level appointments and many departments are perceived as having been compromised through promotions.

Pros

- Great work life balance - Job security - There are some great and talented people who believe in the betterment of the continent - Great information and resources - Multicultural environment

Cons

- Living in Tunisia can be challenging - A very political work environment - Managers give great reviews to under-performers in order get them promoted\ transferred out of the department - Salaries are generally OK but annual raises are at a whooping 2.3% - It takes forever to get even the simplest things done - I once heard the Bank described as a "glorified village" due to the cliquish nature of its employees and the organizations' apparent hiring practices. It is not uncommon to see a request expedited for some nationalities or ethnic groups while other requests are ignored or put on the back burner. In some countries the Bank would have been sued countless times for some form of discrimination or other - Very apparent separation of the classes between professional staff and general service staff. - Little to no growth opportunities for General Service Staff. It is highly unlikely that a general service staff member can get promoted to a professional position even if they meet the requirements
