Pros

I was employed by AT&T for over 20 years and found it to be a great company to grow up in. Through different roles that I have had, I learned a lot about the wireless business, network technology and people management. The benefits that are offered are well-rounded but for a company this size, the cost for those benefits is very high.

Cons

In comparison to the culture that once was old Cellular One or AT&T Wireless, this AT&T's culture is very difficult. At the time of transition, management from the landline environment promoted their own so many of the progressive thinkers left. Money for most things has diminished year-over-year and is to a point where people feel fortunate to have toilet paper in the restrooms. There is no more coffee, filtered water, plastic utensils or even plants at allowed at desks. In fact, most people are losing their desks to shared work environments that encourage collaboration. Sounds like a good thing, however the problem is that work teams don't sit in the same state so you are in a share space and no one to collaborate with. Sadly, you cannot move easily between internal teams because unless your manager can get a backfill for your position, you cannot be released to another manager even if there is an open slot available somewhere else. For me personally, I left the company because I could not move or get away from my toxic and ineffective manager. Although there is a lot of web-based training for personal growth, there is no longer a need to interact with others through shared learning or direct contact. Level 3 managers (i.e., Directors) and above are the only audience that get exposed to travel or onsite training opportunities. The balance of people work by phone to navigate business and network issues. This company is now so massive that you are left feeling like the number you really are.

We have grown into much more than just a wireless company, and that comes with a lot of continued training, growth and development. We are glad to hear that you found AT&T a great company to grow up in, and we’re sorry to hear about your experience with management. We appreciate your input on our culture, pay and benefits and we will use your feedback as we move forward with our goals. Thanks again

Pros

Made some really good friends. It helped get my foot in the door in the software industry. Left a lot to be desired, which motivated me to learn a lot in my free time outside of work. Flexible-ish hours. It was very easy to schedule appointments and flex a few hours through out the week. I've recently heard this has been limited to 15 minutes total for brand new employees now, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Used to be really easy to work from home during bad weather conditions. Not sure if that will still be true for new hires.

Cons

Very little mentorship from senior employees. They are either too busy with redundant meetings or don't have enough knowledge to actually help mentor. Too many exempt employees work crazy hours (60+). For entry and junior level positions, you're often capped at 40 hours per week (which is an excellent pro). This also discourages folks from staying long at the company because people don't like working 60+ hours. Basically zero recognition for hard work. They do give decent bonuses for hard work, but the low salary and benefits don't make up for it. Most higher ranked people are only that level because they've stayed so many years at the company; it's not skill-based. It's very easy for an entry level employee with a little bit of initiative to become a "Subject Matter Expert (SME)" or to even act as a technical team lead just because so much of the senior staff is outdated/unmotivated. Leadership doesn't trust employees and employees don't trust leadership.
