Pros

As with any large conglomeration, the rules are consistent throughout the other stores in which some friends work, holidays, holiday pay, monthly wage and breaks were all comfortably structured. The canteen was always quite alright to be in, and I had the opportunity to work alongside some genuinely lovely people.

Cons

Unfortunately there were other coworkers who had grown bitter with management and interacted somewhat miserably and spitefully toward staff and customers. There was a significant lack of listening to each other.

Pros

Colleague recruitment is fantastic - I worked with some great and committed people, who really wanted to see their job done right.

Cons

Managers seem to want to poke their noses in on everything. I was left to my own most of the time, trusted to organise the department as fit to increase sales, but every time a new manager came in I would have to go through the process of having the department reorganised by them, being blamed for a drop in sales, and working my backside off to get the department back the way it was before they arrived. Pointless shower.

Pros

Good job security, fair wages, not mentally demanding. Customer focused with an emphasis on putting their needs first. Allows training in multiple areas of customer service, retail and food production.

Cons

As said in the title, my experiences varied greatly working for Asda depending on who my line manager was at the time. Some were very accommodating and allowed flexibility in your working days etc, others were very rigid. Taking holidays was a nightmare as you had to put in all 4 weeks of holidays at the start of the new year, with longer serving staff members getting "their" holidays every year. The overtime culture around christmas was also awful - with ALL staff expected to seriously increase the number of both hours and days that they worked, which as a part time member of staff meant essentially having to work full time when not always convenient or risk facing your manager to have a talk about you "letting down the team"
