Pros

Money and prestige... Until the government bailout.

Cons

Work/Life balance and poor communication. Even before any of the recent issues with AIG became apparent, the company had always had poor communication between Directors & Vice Presidents, and different departments. By the time their messages get down the line, department supervisors are giving out information to their individual departments that is conflicting with what other supervisors are giving theirs. In addition, AIG has been restructuring for quite a while now, and each month that goes by it becomes more and more unlikely that any vacation time will ever be approved. I understand the company needs it's employees there as much as possible, but having to schedule a week off a year in advance is not always possible. Life happens, and sometimes six months advance is the most you can give for a life event. If one cannot have a life working for AIG, the one should consider not working for AIG.

Pros

A big company with various opportunities. The company used to be a very safe and secure place for work, though its not anymore true but still there are some smart people in the company.I have seen lot of people sticking around with the company for more than 15-20 years.

Cons

The compensation and benefits are not very generous, there is literally no bonus for people below managerial ranks and growth with in the organization is very limited. A lot depends on the department and manger ,for whom you are working. The company is very old traditioned in terms of telecommuting or flexi hours, there is literally no concept of work from home.

Pros

AIG is a large company with many opportunities. Getting your foot in the door is a good start to understanding the corporate environment and culture of the company. Departments are actually typically small with limited room for advancement but moving to other business units presents a much larger set of opportunities or you can use your experience for an external move.

Cons

Although AIG is large, the separate operating companies fail to take advantage of the company's size and scale with many profit centers working in a siloed environment and each reinventing similar business processes and technology improvements. Frustrating knowing that other units have access to things (tools, processes, policies) we don't
