Process- online code assessment, then a 30-minute interview session with two people in the department.
Interview- the interview was standard, basically questions about past projects and skills. As well as a few behavioral questions. What would you do if you disagreed with the leader? Why do you want to live in Japan?
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Rakuten (Tokio) in Jul 2013
Interview
There is a coding test in Codility. Then there are 6 face-to-face interviews of which only 1 has technical questions. They take around 2 or 3 weeks to give the result of each interview, so the process is very long. The first interviews seem more relevant to the position, while the last interviews seem more of a formality. The last interviews are conducted by people very high up in the hierarchy. People are very friendly and professional during the whole process.

Question 1
Coding test: given 2 rectangles described by their top-right and bottom-left coordinates, return the top-right and bottom-left coordinates of the intersection. Time limit is 1 hour.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Rakuten (Tokio) in Mar 2014
Interview
Contacted on LinkedIn. Said they were looking to discuss career options. I said ok and they told me to do a preliminary Codility test. Then we arranged a schedule for the meeting.
They didn't ask much and I supposed they didn't speak English that much either. Interestingly they let me ask questions which took more time than then interview itself. I think I asked a sensitive question about who was responsible for the front page (which we know is messy). The situation became pretty awkward when they said "nobody". Apparently they just divide slots on that page among departments. The so many smartphone apps available in Play Store were also a product of a similar policy: they just do because others do it, not because users need it. I think I asked them if they counted in users' perspective but needless to say, it was not appreciated.

Question 1
A short coding test. About five people from different departments asking you to explain your history. The rest of the time you are allowed to ask questions. It is better to communicate in Japanese.
