      Software Engineer Interview

      Aug 27, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Berlín
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Perk (Berlín) in Mar 2024

      Interview

The interview process included an initial HR screening, followed by three stages of technical interviews, and concluded with a final call with the VP of Engineering. The HR screening was a basic 30-minute conversation with a recruiter who was very helpful and kept me informed throughout the entire process. The technical interviews were split into three parts: Technical Assessment: This stage was a 1.5-hour session with two engineers. The focus was mainly on questions about my experiences, Python, databases, and some behavioral questions. Live Coding: The next stage was a live coding session with two different engineers, lasting 1.5 hours. The task involved building an endpoint to interact with an external service. System Design: This interview lasted for 2 hours and involved designing a system similar to Google Analytics with two more engineers. The final step was a call with the VP of Engineering, which focused on my motivations and experiences. Unfortunately, I was rejected at this stage with a generic template response and no feedback. Overall, the engineers I met up to the system design interview were very intelligent, friendly, and seemed like great potential colleagues. However, the interview process felt overly lengthy for a company of this size, and the lack of specific feedback after the final stage was disappointing. Additionally, candidates do not apply for specific teams; team assignments are made only if an offer is extended. This approach does not allow candidates to ask any team-specific questions beforehand, which could be a drawback.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Technical Assessment: - Describe a project you worked on - How does Python manage memory? - What is the difference between async and multiprocessing? - What is the N+1 problem? Live Coding: Fetch data from an external API, sort the fetched objects, and implement caching for repeated requests. System Design: Design an analytical system that can scale globally. VP Interview: - What motivated you to become a software engineer? - What are your career goals?

      Easy interview

      Interview

Was reached out by a recruiter on LinkedIn. Scheduled a meeting with them. Interview felt a little off. Recruiter would ask a question and then move on to the next one without pausing or follow-ups, he was looking down the whole time reading the questions directly. You can tell he didn’t care what I was saying since the interview had a transcript recording. He then stated that the technical interview will be as difficult as FAANG because they have a high bar. He then says he hates when recruiters ghost candidates so I should expect an email within a week to know if I’ve moved on. It’s been a few weeks and no response. Granted, I could’ve reached out but if your whole spiel is not ghosting candidates and then you proceed to do so, I don’t want to follow up with you.

      Software Engineer Interview

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Barcelona
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Perk (Barcelona) in Jun 2025

      Interview

Hands down worst interview I have ever had. The first technical test was fine just basic questions. The second test was supposed to be a screen share code challenge. When i arrived the interviewer asked to see my prepared API which I didn't have, the email confirming the test didn't tell me to set up anything beforehand and i checked spam but got nothing so I had nothing to build off of. The interviewer then proceeded to rush the test and push me to make an APi but kept saying oh don't actually make the file structure and don't worry about interfaces etc and just make it functional. I was going to leave the interview but as someone had referred me I didn't want to make them look bad. Even though rushed I finished the API and described to him the preferred way of doing it. The response was, "the code structure could have been better organized" and rejected. Obviously it could've been better organized but he said just make it functional because we don't have time. Terrible way to interview. If the interview isn't prepared then reschedule and let me build something robust, don't decide to rush it.

      Interview

30 min recruiter call, 1.5 hour technical discussion, 1.5 hour live coding, 2 hour system design, 30 min call with a senior leader. Process took multiple weeks - overly lengthy and onerous given what the company has to offer. Would avoid going through such a process again.
