Pros

Working experience as a freelance translator/proofreader

Cons

Don't know where to begin. Staff turnover is worse than that in McDo, new PMs trying to push rates even lower (leading to 4-dollar jobs worth only 4-letter words), new freelancers ready to work for 0.002 $/word and producing the translation which is worse than that produced by the machines. As mentioned above, the atmosphere in the company is toxic, as in 1-dollar shop with untidy and bad humored underpaid staff, loads of goods which are not worth the place they are taking, and unsatisfied customers who cannot find one single thing worth buying.

Pros

It was fine for a while. The PM's were friendly, the rates and the deadlines reasonable.

Cons

Then the agency was sold and became a sweatshop. The rates became insultingly low, the deadlines shorter every day. Personalized mass emails. The lowest bidder gets the job. PM’s don’t bother answering your emails. And they are buying little local agencies around the world.

Pros

- Chances to engage in big project - Various fields / type of documents to widen your specialty

Cons

- Deadline is often too tight: Some projects were flexible depending on how you negotiate with PMs, but my impression is that the initial setting of deadline is only profit-oriented and not considering the actual time required for translators to deliver their work in satisfying quality. - Some PMs are inadequate in communication: Due to time difference, sometimes I needed to correspond with several PMs during night time who had no idea of what's going on and general knowledge of the projects. I felt there is not enough communication amongst Transperfect PMs as I had to explain the same thing over and over again. - Some PMs are lacking knowledge on translation process/ translator's needs: In some projects, there were massive number of random files, which didn't show any co-relation inbetween. As a result, I spent large amount of time on figuring out which text is where in the document. This time loss could've been saved if PMs had checked the actual files and confirm with the clients first to get the files translation-ready. In terms of rating and deadline setting, I feel language combinations and complexity of text are not taken into consideration.
