Pros

Lots of talented, well educated co-workers. Get lots of responsibility and training here. Most people work in offices which have doors, about 30% in cubes. Centralized downtown location, company also pays for metro park and ride bus passes, good 401k matching, great medical insurance, and fitness club subsidy at nearby downtown ymca. Salary levels are targeted to be in 60% of big energy company ranges with another 5% to 10% added at end of year as potential bonus. Some middle level jobs have international travel opportunities.

Cons

Business environment is working against the European side of the chemicals business for the next 5 years and likely further cost cutting there will probably be felt in the US. Expecting to see cost reductions on US side in the next 12 months which will affect the average employee in areas of bonus, training, travel, salary, and staffing levels. The recent reorganization moved many people into jobs they did not prefer to have and has resulted in turnover with positions not being replaced. Some areas in US are understaffed resulting in occasional or even frequent heavy workload. Excessive amount of power points, justifications, and long term planning. Decision making is slow, even more so because of foreign management culture.

Pros

The people make this company worthwhile.

Cons

In the process of reorganization, it has become clear that this particular branch of the company has lost its "meaning". Management is not clear with its direction; and recent job placement, according to skill set, is just one of the shining indicators.

Pros

Travel abroad: one of the main reasons I joined Total was the opportunity to see the world. International mobility is a prerequisite for anyone considering working for Total. Work/life balance is quite good at Total....I've never seen a project get sacrificed for someone's summer 5-week vacation!

Cons

Coming from the ex-Total group (remember that Total purchased Fina then Elf), the new group certainly has the 'critical mass' to compete with its industry peers, but the overall level of responsibility for a given experience level has dropped dramatically compared to pre-merger days. It is felt by the majority of those coming from the ex-Total employees that we have entered into more of a 'study group' where much time and $ is spent on studies for 'studies sake'. - The company plays well the 'monopoly' on french-based employees: as they have a job for life (excepting any gross professional misconduct), the salary reflects that point and as a result is much lower than any non-French oil company.
