Pros

Remote work. Great compensation and bonus structure (until everything came to a grinding halt in early 2023). Smart and accomplished people who deserve better.

Cons

It has been said before, and I'll repeat it: The CEO operates without a board, making decisions that are unfounded and unchecked. This has led to frequent, unannounced layoffs. Often, you only realize someone is gone when you try to message them and find their Slack profile deactivated. Additionally, salaries have been frozen for over a year, bonuses are under scrutiny, and U.S. benefits have been reduced—401k matching has been eliminated, and healthcare premiums are no longer fully covered by the company. Reducing benefits after multiple rounds of layoffs demonstrates a complete lack of respect for the employees who continued to support Toptal. The implicit truth at Toptal is that job security exists only if you aren't costly. Company culture is dead, and morale is at an all-time low. At Toptal, you either work until you get laid off or become so burned out and exhausted from exploitation that you lose the motivation to continue working.

Pros

Above average pay and a truly remote-first culture make this a compelling place to work. Some teams get travel perks, but it's highly selective. Vacation time is, despite what they say, limited. However, it's a fairly generous 35 days, including holidays that you choose to take off.

Cons

Our CEO recently spoke with us about attempting to prevent a culture of fear. Sadly, that is the only thing keeping the ship together. Since many workers are afraid to raise legitimate concerns or point out issues, development is cyclical and static. He won't relinquish control and trust his workers. No board of directors exists. No C-suite other than fervent yes guys. He merely believes his approach to be the best one. They were successful for many years because there was little competition, but they are now struggling in the face of many better alternatives. The numbers are dropping, and he refuses to heed the counsel of the countless bright individuals he has hired to repair it. In group calls, he has a reputation for publicly ridiculing others. Top management frequently lies.

Pros

They talk a great game; some of your colleagues will be smart

Cons

Iffy practices around hiring; they gather work samples in interviewing process with no intention of hiring; they then use the candidate solutions as free work to progress projects. Old guard white guy culture
