Pros

It's a great job if you like to be physically active, work in a fast paced environment, have attention to detail and are driven to make a difference. You must be a people person and like diversity.

Cons

Many times you must deal with adversity whether in the workforce or the traveling public. Regarding the workforce, many times screeners are lazy or don't perform screening procedures correctly. As an LTSO, you are responsible for ensuring that screening procedures are performed correctly, and coaching and/or making corrections in a positive, constructive way. As far as the traveling public, many times passengers are rude and impatient. As an LTSO, you MUST be able to remain calm, objective and fair in your treatment of them even if they don't deserve it. Any behavior that is unmanageable may need to be reported to airport police.

Pros

Pay is good, but you will pay for it with high stress and more Dr. bills due to high stress which can kill you.

Cons

Managers and other higher Management teams are mostly selfish and all about their government careers and retirements. Not about actual security mission focused. I was off work for two days ON DOCTORS orders with written Dr. Note and the manager still called me at home to ask my why I wasn't at work. (not to see how I was doing) that's work place harassment if you ask me. Even though I had followed all of their procedures of accurate call offs. Which by the way is to call two different locations and give all my info to two different people.

Pros

You don't need to bring your job home with you although you oftentimes do. It pays a good majority of the bills.

Cons

Everybody in the country hates you. You can't browse the internet without coming across something belittling you for what you do for a living. Asinine and unreasonable yearly recertification process. Failure of a pay-for-performance system. Not on the General Schedule. Lots of rules and policies made on the fly that vary from work location to work location. Morale could not be worse across the workforce. Calls for privatizing workforce increasing. Massive turnover rate that has recently sharply increased.
