Pros

There's a good work/life balance, and some really great people (for now).

Cons

There have been a lot of top down decisions, and communication has ranged from appalling to non-existent. Throughout the merger management has fostered resentment between ex-Springer and ex-Macmillan teams by pitting technologies against each other, rather than working together to come up with reasonable solutions. Unrealistic deadlines have been imposed (again, from on high) which will likely result in a degraded experience for our end users.

Pros

Great work life balance and Kings Cross is a good location.

Cons

Since the two companies merged there has been poor management and communication within the technology department. Management are not talking to their staff correctly and in a lot of cases it seems each other as there are mixed messages coming from management. This has a huge affect on the teams when they insist on top down decisions rather than working with the teams. An unhealthy atmosphere has been created of ex-nature and ex-springer that has in part been created by management playing the two companies technology stacks against each other rather than working together to create solutions. The choice of technology stacks has also been decided at the top with poor communication so the direction is constantly shifting. Then when there are shifts within the approach or the overly optimistic deadlines are questioned no one will take responsibility for them. Nature had a very strong team within the technology department who really understood the needs of the business, unfortunately all these people are now leaving or have already left as they have been undervalued within the department.

Pros

Free tea and coffee. A few very good people left. Nice offices. New CEO joining who will hopefully bring the company into the 21st century.

Cons

Too many to mention but I will provide a synopsis. Low pay by industry standards. The company is run by a bunch of publishing dinosaurs who are stuck in the 80s! Very old school leadership where the white male reigns supreme and women are treated like second-class citizens. Corporate greed with an emphasis on quantity over quality. A top-down bullying macho culture that pays lip service to company values. People can be pushed out at a whim, particularly women. No career progression, unless one is white male. No sense of community - more a sense of uncertainty and a tangible fear. HR are corporate muppets and entirely useless.
