Pros

My immediate boss is professional and nice, but is very busy. Free food on Fridays, although it is always pizza now and used to be more varied. Nice people to work with.

Cons

Department turnover is too high. I have to take work home with me on weekends because it is impossible to do everything I have been given due to the turnover. Additionally, it seems to take them over a month to hire replacements for positions where people have left or been terminated. This is confusing because of the extensive interview process they do to get the "perfect" candidates, there is a disconnect between what the employee and employer finds perfect, I guess.

We want to thank you for your diligence and hard work. We know it can be tough when there’s an opening and the extra work has to be absorbed. We encourage you to voice your concerns regarding workload with your manager in your regular one-on-one meeting. In addition, you should always feel comfortable coming to HR to discuss your concerns.

Pros

Very flexible place to work, post pandemic you can WFH as much as you like, very supportive to parents etc. They've done a good job of making days in the office worthwhile when they are enforced.

Cons

SAGE still behaves like a small publisher when it isn't one. At management level your "feedback" is continually sought but there is a company line to tow and if you don't follow it you are ostracised. This just breeds toxicity and resentment - stop asking for opinions you don't want to hear. The same is true at lower levels- constant surveys and check ins where people express dissatisfaction but then nothing is done. A lot of staff are starting to leave but having been privy to meetings about departures in the past I suspect their feedback will be disregarded. Conversely, the company has become completely paralysed by the establishment of its DEI groups which have open communication channels internally, allowing employees to publicly badmouth the company with no repercussions as it's a "safe space". Global management is a mess - cultural differences between UK and US offices are not acknowledged, leading to isolation and lack of support of UK staff managed out of the US office (it may be the same vice versa). Poor management and direction is not recognised or addressed. The company are not investing in key areas of the business and are falling behind competitors in several places. High performing staff are not challenged as well as they should be. SAGE is a good place to work if you're happy to sit back, relax and take advantage of the flexibility. I would not recommend it as a long term environment to develop personally or professionally.

Pros

Benefits are outstanding. I much longer than I wanted to, just for the benefits. Most of the people are wonderful and kind.

Cons

Favoritism. Low pay compared to industry standards. They pay about 20% lower base salary and much less generous bonus plan than others in the industry. Used to have good work/life balance, but that has changed drastically. They "encourage taking time off and being with your family" but then constantly check metrics in the CRM, number of sales calls, quality of call notes, (was this actually a sales call or was it a customer service type call?) I was there for almost 10 years, promoted, and made goal all but one year, and I still got asked those questions constantly. They give micro-management a whole new meaning. It is kind of normalized when you are there, and then when you leave you realize that level of micro-management is not normal and it's actually offensive.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your work experience with SAGE. While we appreciate hearing your positive feedback about our benefits and your great colleagues, clearly you had concerns about how the leadership team in your department assessed daily activity. At SAGE, we believe in hiring and retaining talented professionals in their respective fields and allowing them to perform their work while providing feedback, support, and guidance when it is appropriate to do so. From your description, you do not believe your situation met those standards. One of the initiatives we have undertaken is one of direct feedback across the organization. We encourage employees to be bold with this feedback initiative and share their experience. Although you may no longer be with SAGE, we value your feedback and would be interested in learning more about your concerns. I invite you to reach out to me privately at Donna.Gray@sagepub.com.
