Pros

As a field engineer, your first 3 promotions are majorly up to you. There's this fixed step program where you have all the achievements, competencies and milestones you need to attain and you're ready for promotion. If it takes you a few months, then you are ready. If it takes you a few years, same. I appreciate the transparency and opportunity to speed. My growth has been pretty rapid. Depends on how you push to get those accomplishments checked off. Also, international travel is pretty common. For those who like to travel, there are a lot of travel opportunities. You learn a lot. Different specialized technologies. There are global training facilities in a couple of countries in different continents. There is a good level of people development.

Cons

Working on the field can be challenging. The field bonus helps and can sometimes generates up to 3x of your salary and even more. So your experience will depend on what your threshold is. Sometimes, you're offshore, surrounded by water. It's a work platform and you feel the iron village like a weight sometimes (friends and colleagues can make it interesting though) . I usually just tried to focus on my project and laugh/gist with people in my free time. Food was okay IMO. Other people complain. Sometimes, you work on land. At least, land feels familiar. Although, from my experience, the accommodation and food and general modernity of the facility is less on land. The industry has it ebbs and flows (geopolitics, price of oil, etc.) which can affect job security sometimes.
