Pros

Everyone here is buzzing. That's what it feels like to be working for a company that is doing well by people/planet, and is successful at it too.

Cons

None that are worthy of mention

Pros

There is a lot of independence in this company and you often get to run projects on your own. Always someone there to help if you need it but we're trusted to run with things and encouraged to bring in ideas. In general it's fun and there's never a boring day. Like any other job, you will have your days when you have to do work you don't really love but that comes with any job. Friday night family dinners are great and a great way to keep the whole business on the same page. Its amazing to see almost everyone in the company come together virtually or during non-covid times, in person and have fun and share comments and see what every team has done over the past week, etc. All of senior management is super accessible if you need them. In fact, the CEO doesn't have an office and he's extremely approachable if you want to run any idea past him. We love a good internal project just for fun. We've been doing magazines for mental health and black history month to have loads of information available around the office. The office displays all of this work and allows for people to put forward ideas for what to put up. In general, it is an atmosphere where you are heard often and your ideas do get considered and if there are problems and you want to drive the change, you are encouraged. We live and breathe the idea of making the world a better place and we try to start at home. Covid lockdown transition was really smooth for the company which was nice to see. In a world where everything crumbled all of a sudden and everything was strange, we were able to not worry about our jobs and continue business as usual. I've learnt so much here and I honestly don't ever want to leave. When I think that I might have reached all I can learn a new project comes my way with a whole new set of skills.

Cons

The in office perks could be a bit better but they're still pretty decent (fruit available for breakfast all day, snacks, free tea/coffee/hot choc, Friday drinks) Work-life balance is sometimes a bit difficult when things get busy but most of the time we are humans first and if we have any urgent needs outside of work we're able to meet them.

Pros

Friendly team, nice managers. Most of the time able to leave work at work at 5:30 and get on with our lives but not always.

Cons

Unpaid overtime at no notice and targets driven although they claim not to be.

Hi there, Thanks for sharing your review and giving us an insight into what we do well, as well as how we can move this towards a 4 or 5 star review in future. It’s nice to see your positive comments on your team mates and managers. We’re all working towards the same goal and the people we select to come work with us at Octopus are really an amazing bunch committed to looking after our customers, and playing our role in building a sustainable future. During the recruitment and onboarding process, we make an extra effort to be clear about the fact we do ask for discretionary effort from our team members. We reinforce the message that it’s not a traditional clock in and out 9-5 job. I’ll make sure to be even more up front about this message from now on, as it wasn’t effective in your case. There have been times recently when we have asked the team to give some discretionary effort to help our customers out during this winter period. There will be times in the future when we ask for this as well. This effort is recognized in many different ways. When joining Octopus Energy we give all members of staff equity so that we can work together on building both an incredible place to work and to change the way energy works in the UK and across the world. The discretionary effort we put in directly increases our valuation. We saw the fruits of this earlier in the year when all staff members who owned equity saw the value in their shares and had the opportunity to sell them. There’s further recognition in the money we spend on social & team gatherings, as well as vouchers, the covid allowance and the upcoming xmas budget. As ever, I’d really welcome the opportunity to discuss this in person with you. If there’s further explanation needed, I’m available to you. Looking forward to your continued growth and success with Octopus over the months and years ahead, as well as the value you can obtain from being part of everything we’re doing. Cheers, Josh Riordan
