Hi there,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review.
It’s great to hear the pros you have listed and pleasing to see some parts of working here suit what you’re looking for.
The team should be nice, work should be fun, and there should be a lot to learn. We’re working hard to maintain and continue to improve these areas.
I am concerned however about the cons you’ve shared and would like to open an invitation to discuss these in person.
You’re like everyone at Octopus, a valued member of staff whose opinion, feelings and perception of how things are going is as important as everyone else’s and as such I'd love to see how we can work together on anything you think just isn’t quite right.
I’d also like to address some points in a bit more detail:
Career opportunities: We’re posting all opportunities on the OctoHub. We want to make things visible, so everyone has a chance today (and tomorrow) at roles in Kraken Tech, leadership, new roles in electrification of heat, energy specialist; ops analyst, credit, training etc.
We’ve also recently sought out the variety of skills and things that people are looking for from work be that location, languages, general qualifications or skills we all just already have and possess. With this, we’re seeking to learn about every aspect of our team, so that we can leave no stone unturned with regard to tapping into potential. Career opportunities, hard work and the value you’re adding will mean the right people get the right roles. I genuinely welcome your thoughts about what may not be working in your favour here at the moment.
Pay / Unpaid overtime / Workload: We pay fairly at Octopus energy and give equity to every member of staff. This hopefully will be a long term nest egg for each and everyone one of us in the company. It has already come to fruition twice over the last year and if we continue working in the way we have been it will continue be valuable to all of us. We do expect more from people than the average employer, we all work tirelessly to look after our customer and that does mean we ask for discretionary effort from time to time. It’s also important for me to note the work from home allowance that has continued for all the team over the last twelve months.
Leadership: We pride ourselves on our culture and give people the chance to fail, learn and develop. As you know lots of our leaders, have developed on the job, with training but have previously been an energy specialist like yourself. They, like you have the freedom to learn from mistakes and in doing so become more consistent. I’m sorry some of your experiences seem to have not been perfect here, and again I welcome time with you to understand what steps we can take to make the development of our leaders, and everyone at all positions better. It’s important to note that our desire with career opportunities is ultimately to be better prepared, to begin our development journeys quicker and to be ready for whatever our roles bring us. This is the same from energy specialists all the way through operations.
I do know that we don’t get things right all the time, and if you do want to have a non-judgemental open conversation, please feel free to reach out to Josh, Tara, Jon or myself.
Thanks for your hard work and commitment to our mission.
All the best,
James Doyle
