Losing focus on people.

Pros

Many intelligent and nice people to work with. An interesting pipeline with regular launches. Opportunity to be creative, even if it's not always supported by budget or resource.

Cons

Managers with more interest in their career progression than their people. Short term focus to get to the next role. People burnt out with limited career progression. Going backwards, not forwards.

Pros

This is a top pharma co, that pays well with good staff benefit. Lots of talented people, which makes the intellectual challenge simulating.

Cons

An army of people is created at the wrong level, who does not add value but only burden the people (who are really working) with unnecessary demands. Energy gets wasted just to align any decision with group vs division vs region, and thus most apt for people who talk their way thru work. Corporate structure is hard and empowerment is only in theory.

Pros

If the team is lead by an experienced and talented Manager, the environment is great to work. Work load is high but a good Manager (if he/she knows what people management is all about) understands and provides a flexi ambience to deal with day-to-day work pressures

Cons

Assessment and recruitment of managers is sometimes poor. A Manager in a setting like Novartis should be best assessed not just based on his/her knowledge, rather its the natural talent for managing people tactfully or can even be inculcated overtime after gaining some experience. Lack of this kind of recruitment creates a tough environment for associates to deal with and their careers are at a stake sometimes
