Pros

In most positions the work / life balance is good and working hours are normal. Salaries are (including benefits/bonus) at the market average (the lower side).

Cons

Projects include really old legacy code (over 20 years old in many cases), often written in proprietary nokia programming languages, with no idea of modern software engineering. Management is in most cases completely non-technical, lacking experience. High attrition, developer's skills are not built up over time.

Pros

Things are finally looking up after years and years of downward spiral. Costs are finally under control and margins are better, leading to finally getting bonuses again. Hopefully raises will not be far behind

Cons

Little to no raises and bonuses since 2000. I made more money in1999 than in any year since. Even with cost of living rising ever so slowly, my income has not come close to keeping pace. Also, in my current position, it is management by crisis. Each day at 11:00 priority calls are made and the work for the next 24 hours is determined. If your work is a priority then you are assigned the resources to get your work done. If not, then you have no resources and you need to scrounge for available equipment or wait until your work becomes a priority. This is not an easy environment to work in. There is also work nearly every weekend. I spent all January and most of February working every weekend. Finally management put us on a rotation for weekend coverage. Now I have one out of every 3 or 4 weekends. Sometimes I luck out and there is nothing or only a couple hours of work. But other times they want my full attention - 16 hours last Saturday.

Pros

Was a great place to work during the mobile phone boom. The salary was probably on the lower end of the range but the benefits were good, the time off was great (since it was a European company), and the opportunity to travel was good. Lots of opportunity to work with smart people from all over the work and make world class products.

Cons

Suffered from big company complacency and suffered greatly from it. With the thinking they were invincible in the mobile phone industry they ignored the industry trends and the insight of their employees and decided things like flip phones, touch screen phones, app ecosystem, and US market were not important. Eventually these missteps caused the failure of the mobile phone business and eventual sell off to Microsoft (which was a brilliant move by Nokia to cash out but a horrible move for Microsoft and all of the employees that were eventually let go).
