Compensation & benefits are unbeatable. Smart, hardworking colleagues. Office food is delicious (not as good as pre-COVID days, but still delicious). The work you do at Meta changes the world and working here gives you a front seat, which is exciting and motivating.
Cons
Demoralizing culture instigated by 4 rounds of mass layoffs in late 2022. As of 2023, there is little job security. Employees don't believe in the metaverse vision but leaders are moving full-steam ahead. No trust in the company leaders. Promotions and career growth are 100% political.
The opportunities to drive impact and write your own goals based on the KPIs of the company give a lot of autonomy. The focus on impact rather than hours worked result in a very flexible schedule. The people are incredible- super smart, kind, generous, and very respectful for 90% of everyone I've worked with. The benefits are a dream and their support (or intent at least to be supportive) of work/life balance is wonderful. Positive experience is very much dictated by your manager and your team.
Cons
Global nature of the roles while allowing a flexible schedule also mean that projects can evolve the role into always on call with meetings at 6am and 7 or 8pm. Very hierarchical and consistent org changes make it challenging to plan long term and a lot of time is wasted redoing work because of new leadership wanting to put their stamp on things vs truly solving problems. There's a lot of fear and scarcity that results in a constant need to prove which doesn't allow for big picture thinking or taking creative risks and process is definitely a substitute for culture/vision.
