Pros

20% Discount Work only every other weekend

Cons

Too many external candidates coming through taking commercial manager roles - Graduates and School Leavers with no Retail or People skills preventing internal progression. Internal Progression scheme is long winded and unnecessary. Senior Management teams unreasonable and have little understanding of the shop floor pressures and have unrealistic expectations to the staffing we have. Not enough time to spend with the team as typically filling shelves due to staffing restraints. A very much if your face fits business.

Pros

- good pay (£8-£8.50) - lots of over time available - staff discount (20%)

Cons

- maybe it was just my branch but the management are some of the most ineffective and unsympathetic people I've met. - kept as a temp for almost a year, contracts were extended with very little notice, and was then let go with hardly any notice - M&S as a company doesn't stick to its principles at all, they do a lot to come across as ethical and charitable, and yet they fund the Sun and Daily Mail

Pros

Nice building. and canteen. Good staff benefits

Cons

Awful company culture and managers. They fast track young staff to senior positions who have little or no experience of managing teams of people. These managers are usually under pressure and cannot handle both their work load and their teams as well. If you want to get ahead then you need to buddy up to the right people. Very bad work - life balance. You are generally expected to work outside office hours and produces an unhealthy sycophantic culture in the work place. Managers therefore micro manage every aspect of work. High staff turnover and little training development for staff.
