Pros

There are a lot of high quality people here, very bright and motivated. The company also seems to be moving in the right direction, adopting more of a customer focus and learning from Boston-based parent Liberty Mutual. The offices are nicely designed, and very open. Safeco Plaza is cozy, quiet and stable.

Cons

You are a literally a number at this company, your identity is your employee "N" number and is used for everything. Liberty Mutual doesn't want Safeco to be a local company, you can practically feel the bureaucracy from Boston. There are definite silos between groups, and a poor flow of knowledge and ideas. Nothing happens fast and things get done because that's how they've gotten done historically. Systems, technology and structures ensure things stay the same and serve to protect the past. There isn't a lot of training, but there is an overwhelming amount of compliance classes that you take online. There is no orientation when you start there, your computer will not be set up (no local IT people) and your badge will not be ready. Hearing muzak by the elevators and in the rest rooms only serves to remind you how old this company is; it's like being sent back to the early 70s or trapped in a dentist's waiting room. Executives are all the way up on the top floor in gigantic offices, far from their people, and an entirely different world when compared to your work area.

Pros

Excellent compensation for the region where I worked. Possibly the top paying overall IT employer. I would gladly recommend it as a place to work for anyone.

Cons

During my tenure many managers were not well qualified for their roles. Excellent technical people were automatically moved into management even if they were not really cut out for it.

Pros

This is THE MOST stress free job I've ever had! The bosses are great, and friendly, you could tell them anything and they wont judge you or hold it against you (Unless it is reasonable to do so.) They are there to help you succeed and move up in the company and in life in general. Even the sales quotas are insanely easy to manage (On the sales rep side)! If you want to take training to advance your career, not only will they pay for it, but they will schedule it all for you too! And they encourage you to grow as a person as well as to give back to your community!

Cons

The benefits are not the best. The company I had just come from offered 100 times better benefits. Dont get me wrong, the benefits are still better than some other companies out there, and they start on Day 1, so you're covered right away. But the monthly premium is REALLY high (three times what my premium was a my last job) plus there is a large deductible to meet before your insurance will pay for anything, and you pay a high co-insurance for prescriptions. Compared to my last job where the premium was a third, no deductible, only $10 co-pays for EVERYTHING, and generic prescriptions were free. For my diabetic son at my old job, between premiums, co pays and his medicine, I paid about $3000 a year. Here I will spend that much and more JUST for his premiums. =(
