Pros

Entry level job/foot in the door for those who don't have a degree

Cons

Company invests near zero into you. Training comes in the form of near irrelevant online training, IOUs, or not at all. "Read Redbooks". I felt myself constantly questioning whether or not I was a valid employee: not much expected of me, no path forward for advancement or improvement. Layoffs constantly; your day will come eventually. "Mainframe isn't going away", but if you don't work for them/haven't the last 25 years of your life, there's not too many options out there for you. I feel like I'm starting at zero with zero relevant experience for another job after 6 years (Information Management System Programmer).
