Pros

Great engineering culture, high autonomy, very interesting domain and product, there is lots to learn. It's easy to move between teams to try out different parts. Flexible remote working. There is little delivery pressure, so not stressful at all. It's also quite chaotic so one must be a self starter and able to handle ambiguity - which might not be for everyone but I enjoy it.

Cons

Difficult to get promoted, expectations to get to Senior level are too high - the existing Seniors don't do half of those that are expected from someone trying to get promoted. The salary ranges are not published, so there is a big discrepancy in people's pay for similar jobs, and it's difficult to get a decent raise once you realise you are underpaid. There are engineers doing worse job yet paid higher than others, just because they are more "visible". There is no HR.. if someone has an issue with their manager, there is no one to handle it.

Pros

A Lot to Learn Technically, But Severely Lacking in Support and Structure

Cons

• Lack of Onboarding: Despite being part of the backend team, I never received a proper onboarding into the codebase or architecture, which made ramping up extremely difficult. • Poor Managerial Support: I had three different managers during my time, none of whom conducted regular 1:1s or check-ins. This left me feeling directionless and unsupported throughout my probation. • Communication Gaps: Getting answers to questions was often slow — sometimes taking days. This significantly hindered productivity and learning. • High Expectations, Low Enablement: Although I contributed to 30+ PRs and actively engaged with the team, there was no clear guidance or recognition of effort, leading to a frustrating and disheartening experience. • Impact on Well-being: The lack of support, structure, and empathy — especially during a personally challenging time — negatively affected my mental health and confidence.

Pros

Great worklife balance, work ends when it should and doesn't go into the weekend Cutting edge green tech Sector is still at the bottom of the bell curve, still loads more to do.

Cons

- Product isn't well formed, lots of sticking plasters over cracks. - Career progression is non existent, how or why people get promoted is not clear. No idea how I could get a promotion, or why some are and i'm not. - Pay is poor, actively told not to discuss it. Maybe 20% below market. - Leads/managers would struggle to get hired in similar roles elsewhere. Handed positions without due process and lack skills to do it effectively. - Focus on the product not just growth at all costs.

Hi there, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. It’s great to hear that you appreciate the work-life balance at Kraken and that you’re excited about the opportunities in the green tech space—there’s certainly a lot still to come! We really value your feedback on the areas where we can improve. We know that career progression and clarity around promotions are crucial, and the capability team have been actively working to make this process more transparent. On your comments about management support, we’ve been looking at how we can better equip our leads and managers with the time, tools, and training they need to succeed in their roles - a great example of this is the leadership development programme. Thank you for your feedback regarding competitiveness - re salaries. We believe that Kraken pays fairly when you start with us, by fair we mean you could get paid more for the same role elsewhere, but you could also be paid less. We don’t compete on salaries, because paying at the top end of salaries does not help us on our mission to offer cheaper, fair, sustainable power to the masses whilst looking after the most vulnerable. If you’d like to discuss your experiences or share more details, please feel free to reach out to me directly, if you have any suggestions that you think could help, we would love to here these too - you can either reach out to me directly or use the capability channels if you feel comfortable doing so. Thanks again for your contribution and feedback! Olivia Roberts olivia.roberts@kraken.tech
