Pros

ING provided a great local team environment with adequate access to training in order to increase your knowledge and advance your career. Benefits were good. Allocated vacation time was excellent although it was often looked upon poorly if you actually used all your PTO. I had the opportunity to work with a great group of people who were dedicated and performed their jobs well. For a long time, ING was a fun environment where you felt like you really made a difference.

Cons

ING has become political and bureaucratic. You have to be in good with the right people to advance, and too often, middle and upper management allow their personal relationships with people dictate their personnel decisions. At the start of my time with ING, upper management was excellent and maintained a focus on the people. They understood that when you take care of the people who work for you, the people take care of the company. When that management team transitioned to new leadership, there was a complete change in philosophy. The focus became about the bottom line and the stockholders. There was a noticeable drop in morale that seemed to filter down through the ranks. With the economic downturn, communication from the top down became much less transparent which bred uncertainty and insecurity among the employees. Good people were either laid off or chose to leave due to management inadequacies, and those vacancies were often left unfilled requiring others to do twice the work for the same compensation.

Pros

You will have the opportunity to truly serve your clients as a comprehensive financial planner who can offer everything from life insurance to disability to long term care to investment management to annuities and savings plans. There is tons of upward mobility here and if you're looking for an opportunity on the management track early in your career this is a fantastic opportunity. Certainly there are costs to starting your own business, that should be expected with whatever company you choose but ING is transparent about this upfront and gives you all of that information in your paperwork. As for the hours, they're not short. But lets think about it this way: what are the most highly compensated jobs out there? Doctors and Lawyers are two. They enter their careers with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt AND have to work long hours before they can get comfortable in their career. Skip the debt part, start a strong career early. It's like putting a rocket into orbit, once you work hard to get it there, it'll stay there for the rest of your life and you can have a comfortable and rewarding job for the long haul.

Cons

None. There are very few companies that I could say this about. But if you're looking for a chance to grow your skills and grow your self as an advisor this is a good option for you.
