Pros

Flexibility & opportunities for different job, roles and countries. Generally freedom to move around - an individual manager cannot typically stop you. Interesting technical opportunities especially on customer projects.

Cons

Very intense working environment, lots of pressure on sales side. Focus on small number of people expected to progress well at expense of everyone else. Very heavy burden of reporting and documentation on managers. Very inflexible world wide policies on recruitment, bonus, pay, expenses etc. Necessary to be 'visible' to progress and make an impact on internal projects (not just customer engagements).

Pros

The pride of working for Big Blue, recognition everywhere. It opens doors for me if I want to move on to something else. Great worklife balance and understanding managers. I am allowed freely take time off when I need to, no questions asked. I also get to work with some really brillant people (and of course, some pretty dim ones too) in the cutting edge of technology. There are also a lot of opportunities to move across jobs and functions, which is great because you get to try out different jobs without losing seniority. There is also a very good training structure where you can easily take courses you are interested in.

Cons

I did not like the huge bureacracy that came with a large company. Lots of red tape and also lots of politics. The waves of layoffs I experienced (even though I was not affected) was demoralising, but I guess it's the general economic situation at that time. And being large and old, there are a lot of deadwoods around, people that dont do much work but draw a high pay. Paywise, it was alright but not great. Bonuses were neglible.

Pros

Working at home. Make 95K sitting home, eating chips, and checking your email every 2 hours. Another good reason is that IBM looks good on your resume. Finally, you get really good at dealing with politics and difficult angry people (who are this way because they are stressed from being overworked and forced to achieve unrealistic goals.)

Cons

Hard to advance career (even when you really try hard) and LOTS of red tape to go through to get anything done. I always tell people working at IBM is 90% filling out forms / 10% doing actual technical work. IBM needs to start caring about employees again and we will care about the company. Until then, we will be unproductive.
