Pros

They provide great benefits. There are many different areas of the company to work in and move too if you aren't satisfied with your current position. It was a great place to learn different areas of the pharmaceutical business from marketing, product development to manufacturing. The former Glaxo facilities were nice places to work while the former Burroughs buildings were very old.

Cons

The company is going through major restructuring (ie downsizing). They tend to promote people who are good at doing the work to be the manager of the department. Those individuals tend to be inadequate managers. They used to have a technical track to allow individual contributers to be promoted and move ahead, however, it was dissolved.

Pros

The company has a good pay and benefits package with above average vacation and holidays. The position I am at allows a lot of learning opportunities. Currently, there are attempts to streamline the office setting (ie. meetings) and production oriented.

Cons

The company is large and getting anything completed quickly is very tedious. Each employee is expected to complete multiple tasks (2-3 jobs on average). I guess this is the trend in the industry today. Some of the senior management at the site could improve on their leadership skills and focus on supporting their employees more. Some focus is lost on producing product efficiently due to all of the politics.

Pros

Branching into a number of different areas of research at the moment with some opportunities being created here. Pay and benefits comparable to others within the sector. The pipeline and product replacement is probably the best in the industry right now and GSK will probably be the largest pharma within a few years. Expansion across the globe means opportunity overseas could be available.

Cons

The company continually changes its targets (which is in itself good) but never allows enough time for them to be met. Shareholders mean everything to GSK now and staff are just an unavoidable expense. If you want to work for GSK, ensure as good a pay deal and as high a grade as humanely possible because your chances of progress within this organisation are very limited. They would rather buy in skills than develp staff. There is a huge amount of 'restructuring' at this company which will likely continue for the foreseeable future, making staff morale quite low.
