Consistent but Challenging

Pros

I began working for FedEx in August of 2018 and just recently promoted to a Dangerous Goods Agent position. Overall it’s been a good experience. While the day to day work will never change, the varying freight volume and added pressure of meeting a fast approaching deadline can make every day challenging. Knowing that your efforts can directly affect the lives of thousands of people down the line made the job that much more rewarding. For the most part you will work with very professional and supportive team members and managers who, for the most part, sincerely care about your well-being more so than the tasks at hand; they strive to pass on knowledge and create opportunities that will allow you to develop your skills and abilities both within FedEx and in your professional career. The job is not difficult, but depending on what work-group you are assigned to, you can be doing extremely physical labor compared to the rest of the employees in your facility (reference cons section). Job security is very high so long as you are not constantly being late, absent, or making major mistakes. FedEx as a whole strives to resolve employee conflicts in the best way possible in all circumstances no matter the situation and take all reports and complaints very seriously. You do have a voice.

Cons

Prior to applying, and until your first day on the job, you will not know what your specific role will be (i.e. loading, unloading, sorting, etc.) and under most conditions this can't be changed without promoting. This is a con because while you may be more capable in another role, or you are not adapting well to the area, you are stuck where you are for at least the next 6 months. If you happen to have inept or otherwise unprofessional team leaders and/or managers, things can be very difficult at times for yourself and your team. In my experience, it can be very stifling and hard to overcome in some situations.

Pros

If you want to make a difference, FedEx will allow you that opportunity. Embracing the Purple Promise is a way of life. The company is dedicated to quality, although their HR Departments and Global Dispersing Departments have never embraced QDM. Pay is very good as long as you start at a high salary. Salary increases are 100% formula driven, no exceptions unless they see a signed offer letter from elsewhere. Once hired, you're in as long as you want. FedEx rewards loyalty.

Cons

FedEx rewards loyalty above EVERYTHING else; so, being a naysayer will get you minimized and set aside very quickly. Leadership doesn't walk the talk. Mailbox is full of Purple Kool-Aid, of which the upper leadership does not believe it applies to them. If you are not an officer or director, you are a commodity can be replaced, but they won't hire you. If you are not loyal, they will make you want to quit. I cannot tell you the number of times annual bonus were reduced or eliminated for managers and below, only to later find out officers and directors received full or greater bonuses. It has gotten so bad that FedEx stop explaining the rules for how the bonus is determined, so that will stop appearing as liars.

Pros

Large company, good benefits including pension plan, and leadership series' webinars.

Cons

Low salary, no work flexibility for long distance commuting, jobs with unclear roles and responsibilities, and managers who have no real skills to be in these positions. There is a lot of nepotism that exists here, which makes for an unhealthy and toxic work environment.
