Pros

Employment of any type in a repressed economy does have value by providing income.

Cons

The FedEx Package handler position was created to service the company need of unloading, sorting and loading it's vehicles. FedEx INITIALLY - up thru about 5 years ago could support the operation needs with temporary part time staff - easy come easy go "BODIES" as we were referred to. FedEx began to value some "part timers" and encouraged them to sign on for "FULL TIME". This full time is not more than part time x 2. There are no reciprical considerations for all the back breakers - no more pay, time off, no sick days, no berevement time off paid, no stock options, no retirement, no 401k - Clock in on time, meet quota, take extended unpaid breaks when told and get off the clock when ordered. And then the work conditions - Below 0 to 115 degrees + for 2 to 4 hours.

Pros

The benefits and work-life balance is terrific. The work environment is great. Attrition is very low and hence job security is high. If you are planning to start a family and want a secure job with good benefits and work-life balance, this is a great place to work. Even though the salaries are not flamboyant, considering the job location is in Memphis, down South one can save a lot of money as the cost of living is quite low compared to the West or East coast.

Cons

From a technical standpoint, if you are a software engineer and have aspirations in designing new technology and producing mind boggling innovations, forget it. This place is terrible in software innovation. To get something done, like getting a new laptop or even hardware infrastructure, it takes a loooong time....well, its down South :) Like any job in the world, yes this job can also get monotonous. But the opportunities to make it exciting and interesting....very little. Lots of bureaucracy (which comes into picture with bigger workforce), lots of red tape and loads of meetings for planning other meetings....Yep, this place is just like Dilbert cartoons. Sometimes I think Scott Adams worked in this place. And if you are single or a young couple, trying to get a lot out of the city where you live, forget it. Memphis has very little to offer except the Blues.
