Pros

A lot of Freedom Great experience It's a job Good employee discounts. Meet great people on the road. That is about it.

Cons

Work 10 hours no overtime. ( funny how your pay stub doesn't have 100 hours on it every 2 weeks) Let me explain the commission. If you margin is below 55% Fastenal takes money out of your comission. Try to be competitive at a 55% margin. They want you to grow and get new business but how do you do that when they take money off of you.(I've turned down orders because of low margin) You earn 2% on everything you sell but anything under 20% margin you do not get credit for. You can earn 6% on new business by taking PY past 3 months and multiply how many work days are in the month. (If your number is 50k and you do 55k you get 6% on 5k) But you lose 5% on every point below 55% margin and gain 5% on anything above...good luck going above 55%. Sooo if you don't get new business and have a low margin you are losing A LOT of money. It is amazing how they take money from the most important people in the company. Your not just a salesman you are a manager, account, trainer, and more.

Pros

This is a great opportunity for someone without a college degree to earn decent money and enter into a good field. Fastenal can be a great stepping stone to industrial sales. It can also give experience in business management if you are interested in that.

Cons

Fastenal is a promote from within company and everyone has to start part time. This limits the amount of people that are willing to start working for fastenal. It doesn't matter if you have a degree or how experienced you are. Once a person gets promoted to outside sales, the base is low and it is very hard to make a good commission. The commission is highly based on growth over the previous year. At first it is typically easy to grow but after calling on the same accounts for a few years, the numbers tend to plateau. Management will ridicule you for not growing even though you are a good sales person and making all of the calls that you are supposed to. Also, once you grow your accounts, you are expected to do all of the service. You have to stock bolt bins, vending machines and make all of your own deliveries. This prevents you from making sales calls and feeling like a professional sales person.
