Pros

Decent pay, flexible hours, and a good resume builder.

Cons

There is no chance to move up and you are basically just another employee in there 2 year in and out cycle.

Pros

Not a bad starter job if you are desperate for work. Pretty easy job to get benefits and a pay check.

Cons

This may be the worst company with even worse management. Here are the best lines from my district manager; "If you see someone throwing out a desk or chairs, throw it in the back of your truck and bring it to the branch." "You want to move some dead inventory, bring it to your customers and leave it on their loading dock. Don't forget to bill them and put the invoice in the box." "If a customer give you their ups billing code, make sure you use it for your other customers." These are just a few example of the poor management structure. Their products are overpriced and take too long to get in. The HUB system is an absolute joke. Customers need product yesterday and they take forever to get it in to the store, if they get it to you at all. Goals are unrealistic and margins are way too high. If you by miracle hit a goal, they will tell you 10 things you did wrong. They will find every way to take month out of your pockets. Don't take a job here. You'll be thanking me.

Pros

General Managers can make a decent living if they have a large branch (over 100K month). Those aren't nearly as common on the west coast where Fastenal hasn't been around for as long. GMs can run the branch as they see fit without a day-to-day DM looking over your shoulder. You will get training to know industrial/commercial products.

Cons

Pay is not good if you are not a General Manager. GMs are expected to work 50-70 hours per week, weekend, before and after hours, whatever the customers need. High sales goals expectations. Fastenal is known for being the highest price in any market which can hinder sales. Fastenal has EXTREMELY HIGH TURNOVER. It is the #1 complaint from customers that they have a new salesperson every year. You will be fired very quickly if you don't meet the set goals and your superiors will forget what you did last month (even if you had a great month). A very "what have you done for me lately" attitude. Corporate is too disconnected with branches.
