- No pay raises based of tenure and no cost of living raises. The only way to get a pay raise is to ask your GM to ask your DM for you. Also, this can only happen when they are allowing raises, as of right now no pay raises are allowed in my district. I have received the same salary for 3 years as the cost of living continues to rise.
- Health insurance for the individual isn't bad but health insurance for a family is horrible. I couldn't afford to work here if I didn't have family health insurance through my part-time job.
- The way commission is calaculated is pretty unfair to the worker. Instead of gauging how profitable a store is, the lionshare of commission is calculated by increased profitability to Fastenal. You have to continue to make more and more money until if you want to keep getting decent commission checks. Working for an onsite, there is only so much money we can squeeze out from 1 customer. We are an extremely profitable store and work harder and harder for less pay every year because expectations keep rising. When I started we were averaging about $1700/month in commission. Now we make about $1000 a month and we are putting up similiar or greater numbers than when i started. More work, less pay.
- Base salary is pretty low, $36,000 for me and is around that for everyone in my area. As stated earlier with no raises and less money from commission, my morale has continued to go down the longer I stay.
- There is no 401K matching, Fastenal uses profit sharing. You really have no idea how much if at all Fastenal will help contribute toward your retirement.
- Overall Fastenal is a lean/cheap company. Unless your one of the few who can make it to GM or DM and want to be in a leadership role your long term future at this company is bleak. They will increase their profitability at the expense of its workers. Its an alright company to start a career and get some experience but if you have a family to support and want to make a long term career out of your job I would advise you to find another company that values their employees more.
