Pros

Smart people in the front lines Can talk to most VPs with a few days notice Fair Pay Sometimes flexible work hours

Cons

1. Smart people get stuck in silo'd work -> you can't rotate b/c no one else can do this 2. Big mismatch in talents -> mechanical engineering interns with top GPAs stuck writing group newsletters 3. Lot of friends and favors -> upper mgmt kids work one or two levels under them, 4. Program manager in our group had sexual grievance filed against him by interns but was still in charge of interns 5. Everything is driven off of group goals/spec/target sheets -> strong incentive to not work cross group 6. Managers are suspicious of motivated people -> why would he schedule a meeting with a different director? 7.Confusing mix of swedish managers saying 'what do you think we should do' alongside 'this is what you're going to do' 8. Education allowance -> only for approved majors at certain school with a business need approved by your manager 9. Stock Plan -> not what you think. Ericsson holds your money for 3 years then you get 2:1 on stock. 10. Lots of micromanagement -> you have to work at your desk, what are you working on, who are you meeting with 11. Manager requires CC on most emails 12. Focus on customer is pushed aside to managerial goals 13. Good work rarely makes waves, have to be friendly to top to avoid layoffs 14. Big break/fix (vs replacing code or rebuilding processes) mentality because it keeps you safe from layoffs 15. Consistent layoffs -> twice a month thursday and then a big one every 1-2 years 16, Core business is built around 3 big customers -> when they pay less, ericsson fires people 17. No macs because it costs $3-$4 more per year per person 18. Not built for millennials or engineers looking for big goals -> sit in your desk and work until someone says otherwise vs creating and driving your own goals 19. Have to fire 10% -> strong incentive to keep new people handicapped so they get the axe

Pros

The Pros that are listed below are based on work experience in Ericsson USA as a full time employee CANNOT comment on other Ericsson locations / regions Good Place to work if you would like to get a "Foot in the Door" in the field of Telecom Virtually every Operator in the US is their customer , overall you get a pretty good exposure Provide Training Opportunities both in class and on the field Local Project opportunities are also available provided you have good "CONNECTIONS" within the company Compensation and benefits are decent but a bit lower than what some competitors and operators offer Provide work visa and green card sponsorship if required

Cons

The Cons that are listed below are based on work experience in Ericsson USA as a full time employee. CANNOT comment on other Ericsson locations / regions Company prefers to hire lots of fresh grads and foreign workers at lower salaries As many users have mentioned in earlier reviews , there is ABSOLUTELY NO JOB STABILITY in the US offices. Layoffs are quite random, without any prior notice given to the employee. This is horror story for an employee working on a work permit. To make matters worse they notify US Immigration of the layoff within 2 weeks thereby making it harder for the employee to find another job elsewhere Regardless of the financial performance of the company there is an annual 10% REDUCTION IN WORKFORCE . This policy ONLY exists in Ericsson NORTH AMERICA . There is no other Ericsson Region in the WORLD that has such a policy .... Some employees in the company used to call this " WORKIN WITH A GUN TO THE HEAD " . Management calls this "HIGH PERFORMANCE CULTURE" :) Career Opportunities are based on 2 important factors : Your NATIONALITY and WHOM you know in the company :- Some people would call this Professional Nepotism . Although HR will vehemently deny this fact, regretfully this is the ground reality and unfortunately the bitter truth!!!! If you happen to be European, particularly Swedish you can have your job as long as you like !!! The career prospects for them are endless and sky is the limit ! There seems to be a completely different set of standards and guidelines put aside for them. Additionally having " BUDDIES " in management is an absolute requirement if you wish to stay on in the company Once you are in the company its quite tough to get a salary raise. So its imperative to negotiate a good salary upfront at the time of hire In conclusion , Ericsson North America should be viewed as Project Management company and NOT an Engineering company unlike the mothership i.e Ericsson Sweden . The only way an employee have longevity here is if by climbing up the Corporate ladder on the management path. Engineers are merely viewed as "TOOLS" to get the job done , and once the job is done , they are disposed off swiftly
