Don't go anywhere near Eni. I would rate it zero if I could

Pros

Subsidised good quality office canteen on the fringes of Belgravia. Good opportunities for development only if you wish to learn.

Cons

Mis-managed organisation with very old fashioned and bureaucratic values. Bullying and intimidation are deeply rooted in their culture where every Manager steps over the person below. Bloated and opaque organisation with thousands of people with very long titles that produce no deliverables; most of which are Italian. Forget any career path or progression; your position and starting salary will remain the same irrespective of how long you stay with annual 2% rise being the only expectation (unless you're Italian of course then the world is your oyster!). Nominal bonuses and the way these are allocated remains a mystery. HR department and processes work on a case-by-case basis which means that discrimination, bullying and favouritism are rife. Meritocracy does not exist in their books; promotions are through political connections or what they call "sponsors" in the higher echelons of Milan. Generally speaking how well you get treated depends on your "origin" and if you happen to be unlucky enough to be sponsored on a Tier 2 visa in the UK they'll do everything they can to block your Indefinite Leave to Remain application so you can remain their slave. Disgraceful and dishonest practices are deeply ingrained in the way they do things.

Very poor management, lack of meritocracy

Pros

Safe job: no one is ever fired, for any reason. You can hide in your office in the HQ or in a BU for years without anyone noticing that you are there. Fair balance between family and job commitments. Competence and professionalism are not prerequisites to a good career, yet, if you have no higher education, no talent and no significant experience you can even make a career of it.

Cons

Desert of competence (both technical and managerial) at higher management levels. Autocratic, rude, unprofessional management style. Directors are changed like socks: no coherent and sensible strategies can be developed at any level as a result. Meritocracy is simply non-existent: young "talents" are selected according to their family's political connections. Higher education level in "non-sponsored" employees is seen as a threat rather than as a resource, and punished accordingly. Micro-management in the HQ: plenty of offices and functions in spite of very little job to be done. Proliferation of managerial positions in the HQ as a means to make careers and please political sponsors. On the other end, understaffing of project teams in the BU with massive use of external contractors and work disruption as a result.

The mirror of Italy...

Pros

If you're an employee there are some pros: low work load, benefits, in the summer free friday afternoon, no one will fire you unless you kill someone.

Cons

I work here as a consultant and I've never seen an environment like this: parasitism, bureaucracy, incompetent executives, no meritocracy at all. This is a real mirror of Italy unfortunately. There are people I can consider smart, but just few people. Without consultants this company would be dead. I'm trying to run away.
