Pros

Looking back on working with Walmart I can say I learned not only so much about how a Fortune 1 or Fortune 2 company is run, but also about myself, both the positives and negatives. The management is great as giving feedback on how to improve your own skills. I also thought the Carnegie courses they offered salaried associates were a great benefit. Make no mistake if you are looking for a cushy 9-5 type of job, this is not the place for you, but if you thrive on excitement and challenges Walmart can be a great opportunity.

Cons

The major problem I see is the lack of quality of the coding preformed. If you look at "The Joel Test: 12 Steps to Better Code" (Google "Joel Test" to see the list) Walmart probably only hits 3-4 points out of 12. (I had a software development position, and this is the part I know best, so I am speaking here to those who want to work in the IT division of Walmart) Because Walmart is so project-oriented (get the project done in time) they neglect the quality part. The second part was the 45 hr work week. They have done studies that show working over 40 hours week over week does not improve productivity and so pushing an extra hour of work per day does not amount to much. If you are already tired from a 9hr day you are going to be even more tired when you get that 3am call in the morning for a production issue.

Pros

Advancement opportunities, great at developing skills, great place to learn a skill and grow your resume, or grow with the company.

Cons

Understaffing issues negatively affects all parts of their business. However, Walmart has increased their minimum hourly rate with hopes to attract more committed employees, and retain better employees.
