I'm sorry that you feel that it's not worth the effort. Did you try to join the special teams, like First Draft, QuickStep, and TME Special Styles?
The general pool usually works as an introductory level, so that workers can become familiar with the style guide and TranscribeMe's workflows in general. As such, the pay is less than the pay for other teams and projects. However, the idea is for transcribers not to stay in the general pool, but to advance and have access to different file types and pay rates. Many people who are on higher level teams feel that it's worth the effort to move up and continue working.
As for jobs not always being available, TranscribeMe depends on its clients to send work in, so how much work is available at a time is not entirely in our hands. Again, there is normally a greater amount of available work if you move past the general pool.
