Cons
Poor pay or promotion prospects if you remain in editorial as professional editor. Promoted to Senior Editor in 18 months, then no other prospects Exhausting and long editorial hours Journals understaffed and most editors under crushing pressure to process papers For me the company has got too big (it is now a mega corporation with 13000+) Low editorial morale due to senior management's isolation and lack of understanding of editorial concerns ...the company's size is making the business aims diverge from the editorial aims. They do surveys but there are too many staff for them to effectively engage with. You can manage a team for years and never meet the CEO face-to-face. 13,000+ organization is filling up with middle managers creating work to justify their positions. All this means less time is being spent understanding and promoting the core flagship products than previously
