Pros

Local journalism is critical, and you will get good experience here. Opportunities to cover every subject and stories often have a national angle or interest. Reporters often move up to national or New York pubs, sometimes within Hearst.

Cons

Low pay, long hours, poor-quality management, no time to coach young reporters, rigid legacy equipment and processes, too few resources to actual cover a town. Hearst doesn’t have a lot of love for Connecticut, despite owning everything in the Southwest of the state. Top management is often very long-tenured, which can bring wisdom, but it can also mean they were too expensive to lay off
