Pros

As most reviews I have read here I agree by saying that you will get exposure to working for some of the biggest companies in the UK which will offer you a strong foundation for a great career and earn you a lot of money after the two years at FDM are over. You will get an interesting role as PM/BA/Dev/Tester working in good teams and a very professional environment. For someone with no experience this is a rare opportunity I'd say. Training is alright but most of it doesnt apply to real work environment (i did PSO so not sure about Dev course) - trainers are cool and acknowledge how bad our situation is when waiting for a placement. Some good, some awful account managers - make sure you connect with the right ones. Free beer on the company party. The good thing is that once you are placed you barely have to deal with FDM anymore. You work in your company and most likely will be offered a contract after two years. You move on and leave them behind - believe me you will want to move away from FDM asap.

Cons

I went for 6 months without pay. Be prepared to not only financially but also mentally get through this difficult time. My biggest tip is to start in H1 of each year as big companies hardly hire between Oct - Feb. If you start your training start in Dec-Aug cause otherwise you are facing an additional three months after the training sitting and waiting for offers. It was the most stressful time of my life. FDM does absolute zero to support you so don't count on that. You sit in the academy and wait and that's it. Make sure you are prepared for that. If you get your timing right you will get placed before you even finish your training so that's something to remember too! About the money..It's not much, FDM takes most of the cut the first two years but tbh its more than I ever made before and you get by as long as your not forced to live in London. And after the two years you will be sorted believe me.

FDM Group Response

Thanks for your feedback. I’m sorry that you feel FDM doesn’t do anything to support you whilst waiting for your placement. Most of our consultants are placed straight away or even before their training is completed, so they have a placement waiting for them. However, sometimes there is a period of time before or in between placements. You will hopefully understand that this is a function of the market and beyond the control of FDM. During any such time we encourage consultants to take advantage of the further training and coaching that is available – including classroom based training and Pluralsight. If you are willing to meet with me to discuss your situation further, I would welcome the opportunity. Please email me at jonathan.young@fdmgroup.com Jonathan Young – CIO

Pros

It is a job that pays.

Cons

They will promise you opportunities that don't exist. The company they contract you to will promise you work that you will not be assigned. I was a Java Consultant with a masters degree in Math and certificate in full stack and I was shoved into a manual testing position that required zero coding and constantly dangled automation in front of my face. When I was asked to look at Selenium, I studied it in some of the copious amounts of downtime i had and was reprimanded during the next meeting for 'wasting company time'. I moved from Texas to New Jersey for my first position. After contracts with the company were terminated, I was pulled off my assignment only to be abruptly fired for "lack of geoflexibility" despite willingness to move to several places they do business including NYC and even Denver. There is no accountability from them as the only response they give is "the decision is final". There is no way to appeal a blatant lie. Their company has no integrity and side with business majors over people that know how chemicals and physics and electrical components work just seem like bad life decisions. They will say you can reapply but they won't hire you. They'd full of it at every angle.
