Pros

Great diversity in employees and people working there, good opportunities as many office locations, creative and innovative people, high quality brands.

Cons

Poor salary, hard work was rarely rewarded, talented staff often left and less talented staff promoted, poor decision making at senior management level (e.g. rushed office moves, risky acquisitions). A lot of bureaucracy in the shared services and their inability to take responsibility for business decisions.

Pros

Great work-life balance. Great benefits — including two days off a year to volunteer at the place of your choosing. Stable. Professional.

Cons

Company overall is a little behind the times. Also, not the most exciting environment. Most people tend to side with the "safe" choice versus the "innovative" one. As with most large companies, there is a lot of red tape. Needs to be more transparency and communication among the different divisions — specifically product, marketing, and sales.

Pros

Very good benefits -- 401K company match, we even had a pension (now gone), and health insurance options at reasonable contribution rates. Pay was good overall in the past, but then the annual raises were so tiny they essentially stopped.

Cons

Elsevier, as the parent company, did not understand what we were doing in our small division. They therefore ignored us and did not provide the resources we needed to produce our publications. We had repeated layoffs, leaving behind a skeleton crew, and then they sold us to a company that appears to be even worse (cheaper!)
