Pros

There are many varied career possibilities at Cummins. It is possible to change roles and career paths. The size of the company also allows for movement globally. You will not be neccesarily tied to one location. There are job opportunities in many countries and locations. In all Cummins has the potential to be a great company. It is a very diverse company that has many varied opprotunites for its employees to grow and move. Climbing the corporate ladder is possible, but finding a comfortable position and staying in it is accepted as well. The diversification of it businesses has helped keep positive growth while the economy has taken a down turn.

Cons

The worst part of Cummins is the forced ranking and firing. Every year managers are required to rank their employees and then a set percentage of the bottom are fired. This worked well the first few years it was mandated but now Managers are loosing good employees. Also this forces a competition between employees and hampers team work. It has become more of a "favorites" system, and highly capable employees are choosing to leave since job security is not available. They are leaving to go to companies where they do not have to walk on egg shells trying to not be the person ranked the lowest.

Pros

The people are friendly, the environment is inclusive, office areas are up graded. There is plenty of technical work. The cash balance plan is great to have. The employee stock purchase plan is great. Parental leave is great. Work life balance is great. Continuous education support.

Cons

As I have recently learned the salary is low. Engineering leadership is on the decline; more leadership good at box checking than being an engineer. As many places are CMI relies on relationships to get the next promotion. Instead of increasing salary they keep adding benefits you don't need. They hire to fire; layoffs every 4ish years like clockwork. Growth opportunities exist when new employees and for certain individuals when more experienced. Now they are taking volunteers to leave; business is good but we need you to leave please. They are hiring a lot of external executives to lead and it is changing the mood and feel and lower level hiring. I think these individuals are just trying to capitalize off the current environment and don't really care about CMI; they seem so fake.

Pros

- safe and predictable work environment (even if you are working from home) - you can spend your life at this company if you are not very ambitious - small and close work community, great people to lend you a helping hand each and everytime

Cons

- If you manage to get to close to becoming a Director or above , you will start noticing the nepotism and the camaraderie - there's random layoffs and firing every 2 to 3 years - in the name of diversity, you may fall behind in the rat race as compared to someone will less knowledge and experience - they don't have a clue about their business continuity as the decline in ICE (diesel) starts - laggards in alternative fuel or technology, been encashing diesel for a 100 years now
