Pros

Cummins is a great place for technical knowledge. There are a lot of smart engineers who really know the products. Most people are collaborative and it is easy to access papers and people to ask questions of the experts. Most people want to work together to get a high quality product in production.

Cons

Forced rating and ranking process is full of problems. You either have to kiss managers' butts or else you are not "perceived" to be a good performer. The process is more about how you are perceived by management rather than the actual work you are doing. You could be a great performer and produce high quality work, but if the management team does not perceive you to be doing this work, you will be ranked low. The forced ranking pits everyone against each other and makes for a hostile environment. If managers do not like you, it is impossible to get a good ranking. Hiring and firing of employees seems to be much too cyclical for such a "well governed" company. In just three years, there ahs been a large hriing blitz, two mass layoffs, and now, another large hiring blitz.

Pros

When they have a good year the bonuses are good. They try to offer activities for the employees and get them engaged. Once in a while somebody sees the light and actually does something that is beneficial to the employees.

Cons

A large company with a 1960's management attitude. Methodology of the month (TQM,Six Sigma, Kaizen,...) Put a lot of stock in nebulous cost savings realized by Methodology of the month. New ideas are talked about and get no farther - nobody wants to think outside the box and take the challenge of putting things into practice, cause, hey - that might be taking a risk. Go with flow - what gets done is based on who says what, not on whether it has any technical merit or not. People are a commodity - when the business is good hire people left and right; economy is going south - fire at will! No job security unless your buddies are in upper management.

Pros

I am allowed to take risk and be creative. Good job is visible and rewarded. Management is very supportive.

Cons

Too much work. We are doing ten times more than we were two years ago with the same amount of people.
