Pros

- Pay & benefits are good. 401k is one of the best around. - Smart and talented coworkers - Free snacks and coffee - Opportunity to work on some really cool AWS cloud projects. - Lots of holidays and PTO

Cons

Capital One is very hierarchical and is a culture of management and meetings. As a developer, I've had 4 managers in my two years here. I've had quite a few engineering jobs, and this was by far the worst managed tech culture I've ever seen. Lots of managers who can't deal with challenge and would rather remove the people with big ideas and replace them with sycophants. This opportunity is best for managers and junior developers because they give juniors tasks that are way above their experience level, much to the frustration of senior engineers. They are having problems keeping senior developers around because promotions are very hard to come by and the opinions of senior talent is not respected. Chest puffing is more valued than actual work. Ultimately, you have to enjoy working in a corporate environment. By that I mean, you have to know when to open and close your mouth and know what words to say. If you are competent and can play the political game, you will do very well here. If you are here to actually care about your work, then I would look elsewhere.

Pros

The pros that I saw when I started with the company have gone away. With the unnecessary changes to management leadership has driven the good managers and employees out and created a negative experience.

Cons

Racist and sexist managers who target you, so much for bringing in diversity champions as managers. Only concerned about metrics and not actual production or employees. Overly political in performance management, current system is a joke and only benefits those that management likes. Your peers can rate you highly but if your manager doesn't like you then you're screwed. The company only cares about you if you are located in certain areas of the country, those locations with the greatest perks shows you who they care about and want to be. Upper management tends to think down on the rank and file employee and seems to only say things to quite the masses but not deliver on those promises.

Pros

some teams are good. Get reviews on the teams and the products both internal and external before joining. Remember this is a east coast company

Cons

Don't try to join the San Francisco office. They might close it soon. The morale is very low and more office politics.
