Pros

Decent benefits, good pay for Richmond, subsidized food on campus

Cons

Capital one used to be a great place to work - most old timers can agree on that. In more recent years they seem to have lost their way. Coherent, integrated strategy is lacking. Performance management focuses only on results and bright shiny objects. Managers have a cursory knowledge of how to effectively manage people, and leadership is lacking all around. Some departments are hiring only externally and ignoring internal candidates in favor of fresh blood. Ironically, this hasn't done much to improve the quality or speed of products coming out, nor has it helped overall morale. Most people I know here are smart, capable and deeply unhappy - they see it as a means to an end. A lot are trapped as this is one of the top employers in Richmond. This will change over the years as new companies start to move to town, but evolution here is slow. The people who are the most successful here are the ones most willing to play the game and play at the expense of others in many cases. A lot of senior management has been here since the beginning of time, and this is all they know.

Pros

Competitive salary, nice bonuses, big 401K match, great benefits overall. Smart people.

Cons

Incredibly hard to get promoted. Certain job families are valued (mainly product owners and business analysts) and others are not. If you find yourself in a category that is not valued, you will likely never be promoted. Don't let them convince you otherwise. If you are being hired in as a professional - not college - hire, make sure you are at the correct level. HR/hiring managers are notorious for interviewing at one level and then offering the role at the level down, saying they want to "set you up for success" and you can get promoted in 6 months. It is not true and you will never catch up to the right level. "Reorgs" happen at least every 6 months. Usually these involve layoffs and massive organizational challenges. I had managers in the double digits by 3 years in. Very disruptive both for getting work done and also for career trajectories. Super hierarchical; no one owns anything, so it's hard to get decisions made, and when they're made, they can be undone by one person questioning the decision or thinking something else; highly regulated environment; lots of bureaucracy, so it's hard to get anything done.

Pros

The mission and values are great. The CEO is an excellent human being. Its an honor working for him. I believe in his values. Its all about the customer. The benefits are beyond great! There is flexibility and work life balance.

Cons

Some managers do not live the Values set by Mr. Fairbank, they bring their personal bias and can make the place unpleasant. There is not opportunities for minorities, which is contrary to the values of the company.
