Pros

The hierarchy is virtually nonexistent - you can reach out to anyone of any level in any department. it makes it an amazing company to work for if you're ambitious.

Cons

The bureaucracy that comes with such a large company can sometimes be a pain to deal with. The pay is not exceptional.

Pros

Being part of a large corporation provides the employee with a lot of opportunity, but also a lot of competition. Depending on the department, you can get reimbursed for tuition. American Express is very involved in the community and really preaches work life balance. American Express really stands out on a resume. Also the business leaders are very very approachable and I have personally met all of the Senior Leadership or my organization and Ken Chenault.

Cons

The economy has really hits the perks of the job hard. The health care used to be really good and made up for the low salary, but American Express has recently moved to a Health Savings Account and cut the health care benefits drastically to cut costs. They've tried to offset this by giving the employee $500 to use towards health care costs, but it's nothing compared to what it was. The Corporate Card division has a very low salary compared to the competition and the organizational behaviors are more centered on promotion based on who you know and not what you know or what you acheived. Promotions are very political and very nepotistic.

Pros

Amex provides employees with the opportunity to be involved in community Volunteer Opportunities which is a plus. They are also very open to work life balance. They are rolling out several /hr initiatives to focus on employee engagement which is definetly a plus. The people at the company are very nice. People are very open to having "cofee chats" with them so you may learn about their role or business. Amex is very strong on focusing on employee development. There are several online, on the job training and classroom opportunities. Also there is a big focus on healthy living. Alot of initiatives such as health coaches, gym membership discounts etc have been created to promote healthy living.

Cons

There is lack of career movement or progression. People remain in role for 3+ years. If you are an external hire your previous experience does not count at AMEX especially if you are trying to advance to the next level. It is also hard to move laterally as well. People movement is very slow at this company. The culture is also known as being very passive aggressive. It is hard to obtain strong, direct feedback.
