Pros

- Work with some smart people

Cons

- The "startup culture" of Amazon means that your experience will vary greatly on which team you are in. Some teams are surprisingly badly managed with poor quality software, no vision and a low bar for engineers. All of these go against the compony's own famous leadership principles. - HR is a pain to deal with. - A lot of work can be monotonous and not challenging depending on what team you are on. You might not have any impact on the end customer for example or even work on prototypes that fizzle out after a year or two.

Mechanism Bloat

Pros

Salaries are competitive and everyone who works there is intelligent.

Cons

There's a culture of implementing mechanisms over trusting developers, which leads to bloated systems with a dozen different code checkers / security risk analyzers / etc. that are in constant need of maintenance. Makes development pretty miserable.
